SWORN VIRGIN
On the territory of todays Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania, during the Ottoman rule, a practice was developed under which if a family did not have any male of springs, a daughter, usually the youngest one would be made to live her entire life as a man in order to preserve the family`s last name, legacy and inherit the land and property belonging to her clan. These women were called sworn Virgins. According to history, they all possessed an incredible amount of strength and pride, and above all, they valued their family and honor above all!
Today, in Montenegro there is only one sworn Virgin left, her name is Stana Cerovic.
