Balkan Stripping
Country fairs or “Vashars”, as they are called to in Serbian, were introduced in the Balkans during the Ottoman rule and in the past their main purpose was a commercial one, they were in essence a gathering of traveling merchants who supplied the local populations with artisan tools and other goods not readily available to the local populations. Today, following the years of industrialization these country fairs have assumed a mostly symbolic meaning in the region, above all they are a place of fun. While during the day people spend most of their time shopping at night, audiences move into make shift tents where the night brings lots of drinking, delicious grilled foods, live music and above all live female performers dancing to the pulsating sounds of live gypsy trumpet players without which no true Serbian party is ever complete.
