Hammam
“Stari Hammam”, or the Old Hamam as it is called in Serbian is situated a few kilometers form the city of Novi Pazar in southwestern Serbian region called Sandzak.
Built in 1591 it is a jewel of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans, and one of the only still functioning hammams in the region. Certainly it is the only one still standing and functioning in Serbia where most Muslim cultural heritage was destroyed after the departure of the Turks and the creation of the modern day Serb state. Since the structure has never been renovated, it offers one a truly spectacular and original experience of what life and customs were like in these lands before the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
It is open daily and has a revolving schedule through out the day, offering 2 hours rotating shifts to the male and subsequently the female clientele.
